Chino trousers for the fashion-conscious man

Looking at the fashion scene today, it's clear that the once-coveted jeans have found a serious rival in trendy chino trousers, chino pants or simply chinos, as most people probably call them. Chinos were originally designed as military uniforms, but they have long since moved beyond that kind of use. Today you'll see men of all ages and in all lines of work wearing them – not just in Europe, but all over the world. Some will particularly value the trousers' slightly formal look, which is why they are often worn as a more relaxed alternative to suit trousers when you want to look a little smarter, but more and more often you'll also find styles with a more casual look.

The trousers come in several different versions: the more formal ones are designed with a pressed crease down the front of the legs, while the more casual types of chinos often have turn-ups at the hem, giving them a more everyday look. What men's chinos have in common is that their fit is usually slightly loose, but that said, you can also find styles in a slim fit or even men's stretch chinos, which still have a bit of width in the legs – one of the hallmarks of chinos. And of course we mustn't forget to mention that chinos usually feature quite distinctive slanted pockets on each side at the hip.

How men's chinos feel

Chinos differ from suit trousers in that they are more comfortable to wear. That's because they are often made from a soft fabric, unlike the often stiff fabric used for suit trousers. Chinos come in versions made from twill – a slightly thicker cotton fabric woven with a double thread. Twill is sturdy and therefore hard-wearing, yet still light in appearance. This type of trousers is perfect for the warmer months of the year. In some places you'll also be able to find chinos in heavier wool versions, which are ideal for the colder winter months.

Men's chino trousers: from the military to preppy style and now for everyone

The type of trousers we now call chinos dates back to the Spanish-American War of 1898. The Americans wore khaki-coloured 'chinos', as they called them – a name they probably gave the trousers because the twill fabric they were made from came from China at the time. Soon afterwards, the khaki trousers were adopted by the US military as its official uniform.

However, chinos haven't always been known as military trousers. As early as 1906, Levi's introduced a collection of "khakis" for everyday wear, but it wasn't until the mid-20th century that they truly earned a place in fashion – first as the key element of what is known as preppy style, and later as something everyone could wear.

Chinos for both formal and casual occasions

Are you into formal or casual style? We may have told you that you can get chinos in either the more formal or the casual category, but in fact you're not locked into your choice, whichever style of men's chinos you go for. You can easily dress your more casual chinos up, just as you can tone your more formal chinos down. Simply pick a piece from your wardrobe that sits at the opposite end of the scale from your chinos. Throw on a relaxed hoodie with a pair of formal chinos to tone the look down and make it more everyday, or add a smart shirt to a pair of casual chinos to liven it up and make it look more formal.

There are plenty of styling options, and we're happy to give you a few more ideas: if you style your chinos with a T-shirt, crewneck jumper or perhaps some knitwear, turn up the legs and add a pair of flat trainers, you're all set for a day at work, at school or a casual evening with friends. If, on the other hand, you style your chinos with a shirt or polo shirt and put on your best polished shoes, you'll clearly have a smarter look and will fit in perfectly at the more formal occasions that call for smart clothes.
